Andreas Glarner likes to hand it out – from the right-wing edge of the SVP.

The question of whether SVP Councilor Andreas Glarner (61) can be described as a ‘right-wing extremist of Gaga’ has not yet been answered. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Muri-Bremgarten AG has appealed against the acquittal of journalist Hansi Voigt (61). This was announced by Glarner Blick. The notice of appeal is available to Blick.

Background to the story: In December 2022, Voigt, former editor-in-chief of “20 Minutes Online” and founder of the Watson news portal, described the SVP National Council on Twitter as a “Gaga right-wing extremist.”

First a punishment order, then an acquittal

Glarner filed a report against Voigt and was right: the Muri-Bremgarten public prosecutor’s office sentenced Voigt in June 2023 to a suspended fine of 8,000 francs, a fine of 1,000 francs and 800 francs in legal costs. Glarner’s reputation had been “discredited,” the sentencing order said. The reputation was also damaged.

Voigt did not accept the verdict and continued the case. With success: the Bremgarten court acquitted Voigt last week. The judge ruled that the term ‘Gaga’s right-wing extremist’ was harsh, but had to be accepted within the context of political discourse.

Now the higher court of the canton of Aargau will have to decide. It is not only the Public Prosecution Service that is working on the verdict. Glarner has already announced this himself. (sf/oco)
