He has become a public figure and is happy to be ‘normal Ueli’ again. “It would be nice to put my feet up and read a book,” Ueli Maurer (73) said when he announced his resignation from the Federal Council to the media in September 2022.
Now it appears that he does not want to miss the spotlight completely. In early April, the former finance minister appeared at a two-day symposium alongside vaccine critics and abortion opponents in Bern. The “Berner Zeitung” reported on this.
The two-day event entitled ‘Corona – Fakes and Facts’ aims to explore ‘the socio- and health-political processes’ of the pandemic.
As shown on the event’s website, Maurer will give a lecture entitled: “Who governed Switzerland during the Covid crisis?” His talk probably won’t go into too much depth, as it’s only scheduled to last 15 minutes. To do this, participants must purchase a ticket for 220 francs.
Maurer has already irritated colleagues
This is not the first time Maurer has commented publicly on the pandemic. Only recently, the former finance minister said in an interview that the pandemic was a “hysteria” that had been deliberately stoked. Maurer’s statements caused disgust among party members and health politicians.
Even then, Aargau SVP health director Jean-Pierre Gallati (57) said: “Ueli Maurer is not an expert in this field. He contradicts the leading experts.” This apparently does not stop Maurer from giving another lecture on this subject.
Farmers and members of the Free Church also appear
In addition to Maurer, more people who have made a name for themselves as critics of the measures during the Corona period will appear at the event. For example, former canton councilor and organic farmer Urs Hans (72) from Zurich. He was expelled from the Zurich Greens during the pandemic for his statements and then switched to the Aufrecht group.
The symposium will also include an event on the topic “Corona and the Church”. This will be moderated by former SVP politician Daniel Regli (66) from the Swiss Citizens’ Forum. The former SVP politician has made a name for himself as an evangelical activist and says he feels at home with the Free Church International Christian Fellowship (ICF). In 2017, he denounced gays in the Zurich city council.
Last year, Blick reported that Regli stirred up sentiment against preachers who ‘orient themselves to the spirit of the times’. However, during the corona pandemic, the anti-abortion activist’s views became too much for even the ‘March for Labe’ and the organization separated from Regli as OC president.
Organized by a general practitioner
The symposium is organized by Thun general practitioner Daniel Beutler. He told the “Berner Zeitung” that his goal with the event was to enable a “facts and evidence-based” evaluation of pandemic policies. The doctor made headlines during the pandemic for refusing to administer Covid vaccinations. (she)
