What does helpfulness and reliability sound like? The canton of Bern has an answer to this. The cantonal government had its own melody composed. The aim of this is to “clearly recognize the canton not only by the image but also by the sound,” the State Chancellery announced on Monday.
For example, in the future, the audio logo will be used in the opening and closing credits of explanatory videos about voting. It is intended to make it clear that the Canton of Bern is “moving with the times” – “fresh, digital and future-oriented”.
But that’s not the only thing the sound designers were thinking about on behalf of the canton. A repeating sound in the background should symbolize reliability, authorities explain. The melody is ‘neither major nor minor’, which represents coherence. And the descending whole tone step that is heard “creates a sense of respect and coherence.”
The canton spent almost 40,000 francs on the musical feel-good program, as the state chancellery reported upon request. About a third of the costs each went to the development of the sound, the licensing costs and the strategy behind it. By the way, the canton’s ‘healthy identity’ – the people of Bern must be strong now – was developed by an agency from Zurich. (lha)
