During the election campaign for the highest state office, Argentinian Javier Milei insulted the pope as a ‘fool’ and a ‘bastard’. Both met on Sunday in the Vatican.

The relationship was previously considered tense: during the election campaign for the highest state office, Milei had insulted the Pope as a “fool” and a “bastard” who promoted communism around the world. He has already extended an invitation for a state visit. Francis has not returned to his homeland since the start of his pontificate in 2013.

Before the service began, Francis and Milei greeted each other warmly. The Pope, who was in a wheelchair, and the President also held each other’s shoulders. Next Monday, the Pope will receive the guest from his home country for a private audience. Milei has been president of Argentina since December.

The reason for the visit is the canonization of the Argentinian Mama Antula (1730-1799). The Catholic religious – whose real name is María Antonia di San Giuseppe de Paz y Figueroa – is the first woman from Latin America to be canonized. Because of her commitment to the poor and sick, the Pope still honors her to this day as a special example of charity.

It will be watched with interest to see if the Argentinian native’s visit plans come to fruition. The 87-year-old has announced that he wants to travel back to his home country for the first time in the second half of this year. However, his health has clearly been bothering him for some time.

Francis had to cancel his planned trip to the world climate summit in Dubai at short notice last year. The Argentine head of state’s program also includes meetings with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella on Monday. (SDA)
