“I do not believe that Switzerland should suspend funding for the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA),” Goetschel said in an interview with “Le Temps” published on Monday. “The fact that employees were involved in the October 7 terrorist attacks is regrettable and people must be punished,” said the Swisspeace director, “but that is no reason to question the entire organization.”
There is currently no alternative for the education and health care of the Palestinian people, Goetschel said. Regarding the states that fund UNRWA, he added: “If they had wanted to reform UNRWA in the past, they would only have had to do so.”
UNRWA has been at the center of a controversy since Israel accused 12 of its 30,000 regional staff of involvement in the October 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
In response, a dozen countries, including major donors such as the US, Germany, Britain and Sweden, have announced they will suspend their funding to the aid agency. Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, urgently warned on Thursday against halting funding for the aid agency. Switzerland is waiting for further information before making a decision on its UNRWA support, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced at the end of January. (SDA)
