In the end there was only a difference of four votes. The women’s umbrella organization Alliance F voted with 32 votes in favor, 28 votes in favor and 8 abstentions in favor of the introduction of a 13th AHV pension.

The decision is a success for the trade union federation and its president Pierre-Yves Maillard (55). The impartial umbrella organization also represents women from the middle and middle class camps. Alliance F has already proven its strength in elections several times and with its slogan could help the left-wing initiative achieve a breakthrough. Just a week ago, the FDP and Mitte-Frauen announced a ‘no commission’ in Blick.

SP State Councilor Min Li Marti (49) successfully argued during the delegation meeting yesterday that the AHV pension is especially important for women. She pointed out that one in five retirees is affected by poverty in old age. Financing a 13th pension is affordable.

Christina Bachmann-Roth (40), chairman of the Mitte-Frauen, criticized the fact that the initiative was not targeted and favored retirees with maximum pensions, more often men.

Co-chair Kathrin Bertschy (GLP), whose party rejects the proposal, fought in vain for the vote to be released. She tells Blick that there are good arguments for both yes and no. In the AHV, high incomes, where men are overrepresented, pay for low incomes. In addition, unpaid care work, which is still largely performed by women, is taken into account. “That convinced a small majority,” says Bertschy. The minority’s argument that the incomes of boys and families should not be put under further pressure was also recognised. There is agreement that the pension situation of women needs to be improved, in the areas of AHV and occupational pension schemes.
