Agriculture Minister Guy Parmelin expressed his support for farmers’ dissatisfaction.

Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin expressed his understanding for the farmers’ dissatisfaction. In the ‘Forum’ program on Thursday evening on RTS television in western Switzerland, the Federal Council explained that there had been a sharp increase in administrative tasks for farmers since the early 1990s.

In addition, cost pressures for farmers in Europe and Switzerland have increased, says trained winemaker Parmelin. The farmers’ protests are therefore not surprising. The administrative burden for farmers must be reduced.

Fewer rules

Last December, the National Council adopted a motion in parliament calling for a reduction in administrative burdens in agriculture. The rules and regulations regarding direct payments should be simplified.

In its written response, the Federal Council agreed to this objective. The Council of States has yet to make a decision on this.

homework done

According to Parmelin, prices for agricultural products should also increase. “If you pay one centimeter more for a liter of milk, 34 million francs more will flow into the pockets of the farmers,” the Federal Council calculated.

The farmers have done their homework. They would have innovated and rationalized. Instead of putting constant pressure on farmers or passing on rising prices entirely to consumers, something needs to change in the food trade. Transparency in profit margins could be one way, says Parmelin. (SDA)
