State councilor Pierre Maudet (45) of Geneva can breathe a sigh of relief. He was acquitted by the police court on Thursday. The accusations against him were serious: he allegedly hit a car in Geneva and then fled. Maudet has always denied that he caused a collision in the Les Acacias district one evening in March 2023. “I’m sure I didn’t hit a vehicle.”

Nevertheless, Maudet was fined 2,000 francs. But he appealed against this. A Geneva resident accused the state councilor of crashing into his car from behind.

Always in the headlines

Maudet has repeatedly made the news in recent years. At the end of October 2020, he resigned from the Geneva State Council in 2015 after an affair over a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi. According to a ruling by the Federal Court at the end of October 2022, Maudet was guilty of accepting benefits during this trip and the visit to the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

After being expelled from the government and his former FDP party, Maudet re-entered politics with his newly founded movement ‘Freedom and Social Justice’. His first surprise came in mid-March when his movement immediately won ten seats in the cantonal parliament. Then came the second coup: Maudet returned to government last year. (dba)
