The accusation is serious: Genevan State Councilor Pierre Maudet (45) is said to have hit a car in Geneva and then fled. In court on Tuesday, Maudet denied that he had caused a collision in the Les Acacias district one evening in March 2023. “I’m sure I didn’t hit a vehicle.”

He was on his way home from a campaign rally. The state councilor told the judge that there was heavy traffic in the area after the ice hockey match at the Les Vernets ice rink had just ended. “I was driving at walking pace and I don’t remember ever having to brake.” No one came forward to say anything had happened.

Maudet wants an acquittal

According to media reports, the driver of the damaged car followed Maudet and reported his license plate number to the police. Maudet demanded an acquittal from the court. The verdict will be announced next Thursday at 9 a.m.

The former FDP politician has been to court several times. In 2022, he was found guilty by the Federal Court of accepting benefits related to a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015. In April 2023, Maudet was re-elected by the people to the Geneva canton government, after failing in the replacement election for his own successor in 2021. (SDA/oco)
