The race is over. The SVP delegates will promote Marcel Dettling (42), national councilor of Schwyz, as their new boss on March 23. Anything else would be a big surprise.
Dettling was already considered the favorite. However, the last competitors have now also withdrawn from the race. After the application deadline last Friday, only Dettling’s candidacy was reported, the SVP said. In its communication, the search committee writes about the “absolutely preferred candidate”.
The Commission still wants to have “the usual discussions”.
The search committee will now hold “the usual discussions” with Dettling and provide clarifications, it is said. The committee will then submit an application to the party leadership committee. The election takes place during a delegation meeting in Langenthal BE.
Farmer Dettling succeeds Ticino State Councilor Marco Chiesa (49), who was elected party chairman in 2020. At the end of December, Chiesa announced that he would not seek re-election at the end of his regular term in March 2024. (dba)
