Guy Parmelin has achieved what his predecessors could not: after almost sixteen years, the basic principles of a free trade agreement with India are in place.

And suddenly everything happened very quickly. Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (64) traveled at short notice from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR directly to Mumbai in India at the invitation of his colleague Piyush Goyal (59).

Almost 16 years after the start of negotiations on the free trade agreement between the EFTA states and India, the basic principles have been reached, the Federal Council of the SVP was happy to report on Saturday evening on the online platform agreed.

The agreement is intended to secure Switzerland as a place to work

An agreement with India should create jobs for India’s young population and secure Switzerland as a place to work, Parmelin said in an interview with the “SonntagsZeitung” published on Sunday. For Swiss companies, market access that is as universal as possible is crucial.

A free trade agreement also facilitates better access to environmentally friendly technologies and promotes investment. “India’s poor will also benefit from this,” Parmelin responded to the newspaper’s objection from development organizations that India was a very poor country despite its high growth rates.

Agreed to maintain confidentiality regarding details

When asked, Parmelin’s economics department announced on Sunday morning that the EFTA states had reached agreement with India, among others, on the basic principles of patent protection, which has been controversial in the past.

“A new chapter on investment promotion should also be part of the agreement. India will provide the final text on this matter,” the WBF said. The negotiations have not yet been completed. Both parties have agreed not to make the details public.

He met Goyal last May. At the time, the meeting was said to be a positive step in moving forward free trade agreement negotiations. The EFTA States and India have been negotiating an agreement since 2008. (SDA)
