Pandemic as ‘mass hypnosis’: former federal councilor Ueli Maurer spreads crude statements

Ueli Maurer takes aim at his former Federal Council colleagues when it comes to the pandemic.

Ueli Maurer resigned from the state government a year ago, but things won’t be quiet for the 73-year-old. While most old federal councilors tend to act in the background or completely withdraw from the public eye, Maurer gives interviews to selected media or participates in the election campaign for the SVP.

It is striking that his statements about the pandemic are becoming increasingly radical and are comparable to the conspiracy stories of corona deniers, the ‘NZZ am Sonntag’ reports.

“More hot air than substance”

For example, Maurer gives a half-hour interview to internet channel Hoch2.tv in which he makes astonishing statements about the pandemic – especially since he was a member of the state government at the time. The pandemic was a “hysteria” that was deliberately stoked. “That shocked me, this mass hypnosis that took place.”

It was good that they were cautious at first, but then “overstepped”. “It was clear from the start that it couldn’t be as bad as was made out,” he said in the interview. Finally, he, who openly describes himself as an ‘anti-vaxxer’, talks about vaccination.

He talks to lateral thinkers: “We pretended that we had vaccines that were absolutely useful. And now we realize that’s a lot of hot air. More hot air than substance.” Behind this is the pharmaceutical industry, which would have made a lot of money from it.

Horror among fellow party members

Maurer’s crude statements are causing disgust among party colleagues and health politicians, they tell the “NZZ am Sonntag”. «The WHO has just published new figures. In Europe alone, the vaccination has saved 1.4 million lives,” said government councilor of the Basel Center and chairman of the Conference of Health Directors, Lukas Engelberger (48).

And Aargau SVP health director Jean-Pierre Gallati (57) tells the newspaper: “Ueli Maurer is not an expert in this field. He contradicts the leading experts.” The effectiveness of the vaccination has been well researched. Moreover, there is nothing shameful about the pharmaceutical industry making money from vaccinations. He is grateful that it invented this vaccination.

“Does not correspond to usual practice for former federal councilors”

The proximity of conspiracy stories and how openly Maurer criticizes his former colleagues in the government surprises former federal councilor Pascal Couchepin (81). “Direct attacks of this severity are not consistent with normal practice for former federal council members.” He experienced him as a good colleague. Such actions damaged “his good reputation” as a federal councilor, Couchepin said.

Maurer also makes his view of other world events a little less loud, but still clear. He was particularly critical of the media’s opinion. “Once again uniformity about this war between Ukraine and Russia. Where you just deliver weapons, deliver weapons, people die.”

Maurer is critical of the ‘mainstream media’ because, according to him, they all propagate the same thing. He rejected a request from “NZZ am Sonntag” to explain his statements. (neo)
