Agricultural activities would initially have to make do with about 25 percent less water, Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro announced on Wednesday evening after a crisis meeting.
Cordeiro said the measures were inevitable given the drought that has persisted for months in the south of the country. If no countermeasures are taken, “we will no longer have enough water for the public water supply at the end of the year.”
“The Algarve is experiencing the worst drought,” says José Carlos Pimenta Machado of the environmental agency APA. ‘We have never seen a situation like this before. Water levels in both groundwater and reservoirs are at historically low levels.”
