With the signature, Vogt wants to represent the three key points of the young SVP in the event of an election to the Federal Council, the statement said. This includes the party fighting taxes and duties, “ending the madness” and rejecting renewed Covid measures.

As Vogt explained at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the JSVP has somewhat toned down statements about Corona in the letter of intent about its influence. Vogt said he could live with a mask requirement in hospitals, retirement homes or other vulnerable people, but not a general mask requirement.

Even if private companies want to demand corona tests, he has nothing against that. “Without these changes, I would not have signed the letter of intent,” said Vogt, “I am not a corona denier”.

In addition to law professor and former national councilor Vogt, four other people have expressed interest in inheriting Ueli Maurer’s seat on the federal council: the Bernese national councilor and former president of SVP Switzerland, Albert Rösti, the Nidwalden financial director Michèle Blöchligerer, the Zugse councilor Heinz Tännler and the Bernese councilor Werner Salzmann.

Who the SVP will eventually race for the vacant seat is still open. The search committee under former Landsraad member Caspar Baader will submit an application to the SVP faction board no later than 11 November. The final appointment decision is to be taken at the parliamentary group meeting on 18 November. The elections for the Federal Council will take place on December 7.
