Accumulate wealth in old age: Retirees are generally in a good financial position.

The voting campaign for the 13th AHV pension is already underway. At the start of the campaign, Pierre-Yves Maillard, head of the trade union federation, gives examples of retirees who cannot make ends meet on their pension.

Marius Brülhart, professor of economics from Lausanne, tells ‘NZZ am Sonntag’ that the statement that retirement leads to financial decline for ordinary citizens is incorrect: ‘According to statistics, the majority of retirees are in a good financial position. They are also less likely to be affected by poverty than younger age groups.”

A single person starts with 130,000 francs

There is a study by Philippe Wanner, professor of demography and socio-economics at the University of Geneva. On behalf of the federal government, he analyzed the tax data of eleven cantons. He found significant support among retirees.

According to the research, a single person starts his pension with a savings amount of 130,000 francs. The net worth of a married couple is 370,000 francs. However, after that it is not used up – on the contrary: the assets of many retirees grow. Not least thanks to the pension fund. At the age of 90, singles have a capital of 210,000 francs, couples 420,000 francs.

Homeowners and inheritances

An important reason for the prosperity: in the 70 year age group, three out of four couple households own a house. And even at age 90, 60 percent are homeowners. In addition, there are inheritances that many people only receive when they are 60 or 70 years old.

According to the study, the increase also applies to the lower middle class: there the pension starts with a savings amount of 54,000 francs and reaches 66,000 francs at the age of 90. According to author Wanner, single women, migrants, farmers and some self-employed people, who most often live in precarious financial circumstances, are particularly at risk. (neo)
