Alain Berset is no longer Minister of the Interior.

Former federal councilor Alain Berset (51) has barely taken off his hat at the Interior Department and he already wants a new one. He is running for the office of Secretary General of the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, as the federal government wrote in a statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Ignazio Cassis (62), supports this candidacy.

The change of heart comes as a surprise: just a few months ago, Berset emphasized that he “really needed some rest” after his resignation, he told SRF. There is still no plan for the future. When he announced his retirement, Berset joked that he might take up yoga.

Switzerland has been there since 1963

But instead of ‘Oooom’ he now says ‘Oui’: as Secretary General in Strasbourg he would represent the Council of Europe – the self-proclaimed ‘guardian of human rights’ – to the outside world. Berset, who already appeared cosmopolitan as a federal councilor, would be interested in continuing to present himself on the international stage.

The Council of Europe has 46 member states, Switzerland has been a member since 1963. The Council of Europe consists, among other things, of a parliamentary assembly consisting of members of the national parliaments. Alfred Heer (62, SVP) and Sibel Arslan (43, Greens) represent Switzerland, among others. The Council of Europe has no ties whatsoever with the European Union.

The election for Secretary General will take place in June 2024. If successful, Berset will take office on September 18, 2024. Until then, Berset can concentrate on yoga.
