An impartial committee wants to use a popular initiative to create more living space in the city of Zurich by adding floors. (symbol image)

By adding one floor to buildings, new living space can be created quickly and efficiently, the four parties held a media orientation at the launch of their people’s initiative on Wednesday.

According to the initiative text, only existing buildings may be expanded with one floor. According to the media documents, this does not create an incentive to demolish buildings and replace them with taller new construction with more expensive rental apartments.

The densification by adding floors therefore suits the neighborhood: the current tenants can continue to live in their apartments, the long-standing population is not displaced. Established structures and relationships were maintained.

In the city parliament, the center-right parties suffered failure with their cause last year. The left-wing majority of the SP, Greens and AL rejected a motion with a similar effect. With their initiative, the FDP, GLP, SVP and Mitte now want to directly survey Zurich voters.
