It is a complicated relationship between the EU and Switzerland. Both parties have been fighting for years about their future relationship status. But the Federal Council recently published the current negotiating mandate with Brussels. It must serve as a starting point for concrete negotiations.
On Monday, FDP federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62) briefed the National Council’s foreign policy experts on the negotiations. The meeting of the Foreign Parliamentary Committee (APK) lasted all afternoon, no less than four hours. The big problem here: the design of the negotiating mandate.
For the SVP, the EU issue is one of the most crucial. After party leader Christoph Blocher (83) led the resistance against the EEA in 1992, his daughter is now on the front line in the fight against renewed rapprochement with the EU.
Martullo-Blocher should fix it
And so the SVP quickly changed its main champions to the committee. Instead of the SVP’s permanent AKP representatives, Martin Haab (61) and the recently newly elected Erich Vontobel (64), the party sent its first guard to the meeting with Cassis.
SVP vice-president Magdalena Martullo-Blocher (54) and faction leader Thomas Aeschi (44) were present as replacement candidates for the SVP. Martullo is actually a member of the Economic Commission. However, such personnel changes are permitted at any time.
Fight rapprochement with the EU with all means
For the SVP, it is primarily about deploying its alpha animals to combat any approach to Brussels. According to the National Council Committee, they obviously do not want to leave this to the second guard. Otherwise, almost no one in the APK has an interest in sinking the EU mandate before the actual negotiations.
As the “Aargauer Zeitung” reported, Martullo-Blocher forms a tandem with Haab, so to speak. Farmer Haab takes a seat on the economic committee instead of Martullo when it comes to proposals for agricultural policy. On Monday he made way for her in the APK when it came to European politics.
However, nothing was decided at Monday’s meeting and no motions were submitted. This should not happen until the next meeting at the end of January at the earliest. (she)
