Karin Keller-Sutter (60) had several reasons to toast in recent days. Before the holidays started, the federal councilor celebrated her sixtieth birthday on December 22. And now also this: the magistrate has been named Europe’s Finance Minister of the Year, the CH Media newspapers report.
The prize was awarded by the British financial magazine “The Banker”. Every year on each continent, the Minister of Finance is elected who, in their opinion, has best succeeded in stimulating economic growth and stabilizing their country’s economy. In recent years, the finance ministers of Greece, Lithuania and France have been honored.
“incentive to further improve banking regulations”
According to CH Media papers, the magazine justifies the award with the “important role” Keller-Sutter played in rescuing Credit Suisse and “further reforms.” The Federal Council, led by the Minister of Finance, arranged for UBS to take over the doomed CS in March 2023 and secured it with 259 billion francs. State guarantees that UBS ultimately did not need.
Keller-Sutter, who was just named one of the most influential women of 2023 by the Financial Times, reacts cautiously to the renewed honor. “I am happy with the award, even though I would of course have preferred if we had been spared the Credit Suisse case,” the federal councilor told CH Media. She emphasizes that the rescue is not just her achievement. The settings would have worked. “For me, this is a reason for confidence – but also an incentive to further improve banking regulations. We are working on that.” (lha)
