Politicians of all stripes have been bombarded with hundreds of emails for weeks. The sender and subject line vary, but the content is always the same: criticism of the actions of the Israeli army in Gaza.
The senders write that “according to many experts, these massacres are a genocide.” The Israeli population is becoming radicalized and the government is deliberately encouraging violence. The fact that Israel’s right to self-defense is being discussed is a “completely changed story.”
The letter ends with a list of demands that politicians must now make. This includes the release of all hostages and political prisoners in Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and the Gaza Strip. “As parliamentarians you are obliged to comply with international law.”
Emails are sent directly to the trash
The email campaign is causing problems in the Federal Palace. A country councilor tells SonntagsBlick: “The flow of emails makes parliamentary work more difficult.” It can happen that important news is lost or accidentally ends up in the trash.
The parliamentary services are informed about the joint action. The IT helpdesk was approached by several parliamentarians who were confronted with the large number of emails, a spokesperson said. “The parliamentary services do not intervene in politically motivated contacts that do not constitute a criminal offense.”
Anyone who is tech-savvy in parliament can help themselves. “There are an incredible number of emails,” says an FDP national councilor. He now has rules built into his email program that send messages straight to the trash.
