Train traffic between Brig VS and Domodossola in Italy will become more complicated from tomorrow. According to SBB, 38 out of a total of 316 connections in both directions fail every week.

The intercity and interregional compositions are well-founded. The reason for the interruption is a lack of approval. Italy tightened fire safety regulations for journeys through longer tunnels in the new year.

The EC trains to and from Milan (I) and Venice (I) and the BLS trains, which have the corresponding approval, are not affected. The interruption comes as somewhat of a surprise. “Things looked good in November; according to information from SBB, there was a verbal commitment from Italy that the trains would also be allowed to run after New Year’s Eve,” says a spokesperson for the Federal Office for Transport, Public Works and Water Management (BAV). ) to SonntagsBlick. The lack of approval has not been a topic of discussion in regular discussions with the Italian transport authority in Rome recently.

“We were initially surprised that the trains were not allowed to go to Domodossola.” The SBB has now asked the federal government for support in solving the problem. The fact that operations are being limited is due to the lack of written confirmation, a spokeswoman said. “A verbal commitment is not enough for us.” We have been in contact with the Italian Ministry of Transport for more than six months. “We hoped until the end that the written confirmation would arrive on time.”
