There is a lot of work waiting at the counters in 2024 sorting the ballots. (symbol image)

In 2024, elections will take place in Aargau, Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Thurgau and Uri. Voters can redefine their governments and parliaments. St. Gallen, Uri and Schwyz kick off on March 3.

There are two vacancies in the seven-member government of St. Gall due to the resignation of Fredy Fässler (64, SP) and Stefan Kölliker (53, SVP). Until now, the SVP had a seat in the government. The FDP, the Center and the SP each occupy two seats. With Danuta Zemp and canton councilor Christof Hartmann, the SVP is sending two candidates into the race. Their stated goal is a second seat at the expense of the SP.

The Social Democrats want to defend their second seat with Bettina Surber, in addition to the previous Laura Bucher. The Center and the FDP are running for re-election together with their previous candidates. The Greens are also participating with Daniel Bosshard. And the GLP sends Sarah Noger-Engeler into the race. Also on March 3, 2024, the voters of St. Gallen will reappoint the cantonal parliament.

Uri also re-elected the parliament, the district executive and the government council. In addition to the previous five, at least six more people are participating. The new members include three women: Céline Huber (center), Petra Muheim (FDP) and Luzia Gisler (GLP). The current government is purely a male affair.

In the canton of Schwyz, the seven government members, who all belong to the three bourgeois parties SVP, Center and FDP, are candidates again. The previous ones are André Rüegsegger, Herbert Huwiler, Xaver Schuler (all SVP), Michael Stähli, Sandro Patierno (both in the middle) and Petra Steimen and Damian Meier (FDP). What is known so far is that the SP will try to regain the seat it lost in 2012.

In Thurgau, two previous candidates have already decided not to stand for re-election for the government re-election elections on April 7, 2024. The government councilors Cornelia Komposch (60, SP) and Monika Knill (51, SVP) will no longer be candidates.

Also general council elections

At the SP, mayor Sonja Wiesmann (57) of Wigoltingen and municipal councilor Barbara Dättwyler (49) of Frauenfeld have registered their interest as government council candidates within the party. The SP will make its appointment decision at the party congress on January 11, 2024. The elections for the Grand Council are also scheduled for April 7, 2024.

In the canton of Schaffhausen, the five-member government council will be elected on August 18. The SP and the SVP currently each have two seats and the FDP one seat. The general elections for the canton council will take place on September 22.

Atici for Jans?

The general elections for the Governing Council and the Grand Council will take place in Basel-Stadt on October 20. There are seven seats to be filled in the executive branch and a hundred seats in parliament. Before that, on March 3, voters will have already decided on the successor to federal councilor Beat Jans (59, SP).

The SP wants to defend Jans’ seat with former grand councilor Mustafa Atici (54), but is attacked by Greens, who are running together with grand councilor Jérôme Thiriet. And the FDP, LDP, Center and SVP are joining forces to attack the SP seat. You are running for office together with Grand Councilor Luca Urgese (FDP).

On October 20, the residents of Aargau will also redefine the composition of the government council and the cantonal parliament after four years. The five-member board consists exclusively of men.

Successor to Mühlemann

There is more tension in the new election of the 140-member, civilian-dominated Great Council of Aargau. The GLP and the Greens made gains in the last elections. SP and SVP lost seats. The SVP is the largest faction in parliament with 43 seats, while the SP is in second place with 23 seats.

And there are also elections in the canton of Glarus: the successor in the government. Last October, voters sent incumbent government councilor Benjamin Mühlemann (44, FDP) to the Council of States. His replacement election for the cantonal council will take place on March 3. The FDP wants to defend the seat together with Roger Schneider, but is challenged by SVP man Thomas Tschudi.

As every year, the government of Appenzell Innerrhoden (Stand Committee) is elected in the local community in the spring. According to information from the Innerrhoden Council Chancellery, there have been no known dismissals from the appeals committee to date.

In the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the next general elections for the government and parliament are scheduled for 2027. And in French-speaking Switzerland, no cantonal elections are scheduled for 2024, and probably not in Ticino either, according to authorities. (SDA)
