The fireworks initiative enjoys great support among the population, the survey shows. 76 percent of all respondents are in favor of the initiative and 24 percent are against it. Most participants take a clear position. Only eleven percent would have chosen the option ‘probably yes’ or ‘probably no’.
Approval was clearest among the green electorate, according to the survey commissioned by news portal Watson and published on Friday. 92 percent are in favor of limiting private fireworks. A majority in the civilian camp is also in favor of such a restriction. The initiative received the least support in the ranks of the FDP, with 62 percent.
Animal welfare and air pollution as reasons
According to the survey, “stress in pets and farm animals” and “stress in wildlife” were the top reasons for supporting the initiative. Air pollution also plays an important role.
About a quarter of respondents spoke out against the initiative, the report said. According to her, fireworks are a tradition and part of it. Moreover, there are already too many rules and prohibitions. A ban on fireworks also does not belong in the constitution.
The fireworks initiative aims to restrict the sale and lighting of loud fireworks for private individuals. Pyrotechnic products that release silently into the air should continue to be permitted. Large professional public fireworks displays should also continue to be allowed at events, if approved upon request. The initiative was declared valid with 137,193 votes.
Watson’s research was conducted between December 14 and 20 in collaboration with social research institute Demoscope. 8,250 people from German- and French-speaking Switzerland were interviewed.
