White Christmases were sometimes a rarity in the past.

In the measuring period from 1931 onwards, there was no snow on the Central and Eastern Swiss Plateau on Christmas Day for six out of ten years, according to figures from the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology (Meteoswiss).

In western and north-west Switzerland it remained green at Christmas for three out of four years and in Lugano 80 percent of the years.

The last time there was a white Christmas was in 2014

The last time there was a white Christmas at the weather stations Zurich-Fluntern, Basel-Binnigen and Neuenburg was in 2010, at least on two Christmas days – in Neuchâtel in 2010. In Bern-Zollikofen there was last snow on one of the Christmas days in 2014.

Things look better in the mountains. Davos has had only one Christmas Day without snow since 1931 (in 2016).

Snow in Zurich soon only every 15 years?

Nevertheless: There is less and less snow in Switzerland. According to an analysis by the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), there have been up to 60 percent fewer snow days in the past thirty years than in the past thirty years. 30 years, depending on location and location between 1963 and 1992.

If the Earth continues to warm like this, from 2050 onwards it will only snow in Zurich once every fifteen years – and whether the snow will also fall at Christmas is another question. According to forecasts, green Christmases will also become increasingly common in the Alps. (SDA)
