Switzerland will not deport Eritreans with a rejected asylum application to a third country such as Rwanda. On Tuesday, the National Council rejected a proposal calling for a pilot project for such deportations.
The motion by Damian Müller, member of the FDP Council of States of Lucerne, has now been completed. The Council of States approved the proposal last June.
Müller justified the initiative by saying that it concerned people who were undergoing an asylum procedure in Switzerland, had received a negative decision and did not need international protection. They occupied places that needed refugees, that needed protection.
Only narrowly rejected
Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider countered in the National Council on Tuesday that there is no legal basis for such a project in Switzerland. With 96 votes in favor, 91 votes in favor and 6 abstentions, the National Council said no to the motion. (SDA)
