The Council of States makes a compromise proposal in the dispute over the contribution to the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA. On Tuesday he voted for a reduction of the corresponding budget item by 10 million francs. He leaves it open where the money should be saved.
The small chamber made its decision with 29 votes in favor and 16 against. The compromise was drawn up by the Finance Committee of the Council of States. Now the National Council must deal with it.
The National Council wants to withdraw the contribution to UNRWA. To this end, he decided to reduce the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ budget for Humanitarian Actions by 20 million francs. He also wants to state to the Federal Council that cuts must be made at UNRWA.
The latest decision of the Council of States, on the other hand, only requires the state government to regularly report to the foreign policy committees of parliament on the federal government’s contributions to the UN organization.
The military budget should increase faster
When it came to the second remaining difference in the 2024 budget, the Council of States followed the line of the National Council. He agreed to forego a payment of 25 million francs into the regional policy fund.
On Wednesday, the National Council will again have to deal with the financial plan for the years 2025 to 2027 and the UNRWA contribution. The Council of States emphasized on Tuesday that military expenditure must grow to 1 percent of gross domestic product by 2030. The National Council, like the Federal Council, wants to extend the deadline until 2035. (SDA)
