With the new Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express, a new rail connection from Basel via Schaffhausen to Herisau AR will be put into operation from December 2027. The participating cantons and districts, the Federal Transport Agency and the German state of Baden-Württemberg have signed a corresponding agreement.

The core of the project is the continued electrification of the route along the High Rhine, the contract partners announced on Monday. Nowadays, a large part of the route can only be used by diesel trains. In the future, the new train will run every two hours and run from Herisau via St. Gallen, Konstanz, Singen and Schaffhausen to Basel.

It is said that financing for the infrastructure expansion will be secured through Germany’s federal financing laws for municipal transport, as well as through co-financing by the state of Baden-Württemberg and with financial support from the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut. On the other hand, Switzerland participated in this project as part of the 2035 rail expansion phase. Costs of around 330 million francs are expected. (SDA)
