Travailsuisse boss Adrian Wüthrich is satisfied: real wages are likely to rise slightly in 2024.

Trade union umbrella organization Travailsuisse is generally satisfied. Real wages are likely to rise slightly next year, according to the association’s conclusion on the 2024 wage round. In about forty wage negotiations, unions reached a general wage increase and eleven negotiations resulted in an increase in the minimum wage. When you take into account the rising costs of rent, health insurance, electricity and other items, the outcome for workers in most industries will likely be at least the same as before.

However, there are slightly higher wages, especially in sectors with collective labor agreements, Travailsuisse said at a media conference. In the economy as a whole, real wages would not stagnate until 2024 and remain well below pre-pandemic levels.

Wage negotiations in the construction sector and in the federal government have failed. Trade union Transfair is critical of Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59), who was unwilling to pay federal officials full compensation for living costs. This is an “extremely worrying and disappointing development”.

In 2024, there will be more wages in these sectors:

catering industry

The minimum wages for chefs, waiters and other employees in the catering industry are adjusted to inflation. In addition, everyone receives an extra 5 francs per month. Depending on the wage level, this results in a wage increase of 56 to 103 francs per month.

Retail

Coop employees who earn less than 4,800 francs can look forward to a bonus of 140 francs. And for employees of gas station stores, the minimum wage will increase by 130 francs. Migros increases wages by up to 2.5 percent and Aldi pays its employees 1 percent more. Wage negotiations are still ongoing at Lidl.

healthcare

Any wage increases vary from canton to canton. The largest increase occurs among hospital staff in the canton of Jura: plus 2.8 percent. In Neuchâtel this is 2.2 percent more, in Vaud 1.9 percent. In German-speaking Switzerland, the unions are not aware of wage changes. Negotiations for higher wages failed in Aargau.

Cleaners

The minimum wages for cleaning women and men in German-speaking Switzerland will be increased by three percent in 2024. In French-speaking Switzerland, on the other hand, the minimum wage will only increase by 1 to 1.3 percent.

Barber

Hairdressers and barbers can rejoice. Thanks to a new collective labor agreement, up to 5,000 francs per year will be added in the coming years. In 2024, this will be 1.8 to 12.5 percent more, depending on job category and experience.

Security

Depending on the category, minimum wages will increase by 1.6 to 1.8 percent.

Industry

Minimum wages in the mechanical, electrical and metal industries will increase by 1.7 percent. Negotiations are still ongoing for the watch industry.

construction industry

There will be no wage increase for construction workers in 2024. The situation is different for the professional groups involved in the expansion of buildings. For example, electrical installers receive 2.2 percent more wages, construction technicians a flat rate of 120 francs and paving stones 70 francs. In scaffolding construction, minimum wages will be increased by a maximum of 2.75 percent.

Traffic

At the SBB, wages generally increase by 1 percent, while another one percent of the wage bill goes to individual wage increases. There is also a one-off bonus of up to 1,000 francs. At Thurbo you get 2.5 percent more pay plus a bonus. The Südostbahn even pays 2.7 percent more.

Post, logistics, ICT

Wage negotiations have not yet been completed in these sectors.
