The president of Basel has been elected as the new federal president of the SP.

“And then there were only six left,” said Stephanie Eymann (44, LDP), Director of Justice and Security, on Thursday morning, commenting on the new composition of the Basel cantonal government, which will apply until the replacement elections.

The newly elected SP federal councilor Beat Jans (59) has been formally dismissed from his government position in Basel by the Grand Council with immediate effect. The cantonal parliament thus responded to Jans’ request.

Engelberger will take over for the time being

According to the law, Jans’ immediate dismissal had to be approved by the Grand Council. He did this laughing, but formally ‘silently’, as Grand Council Chairman Bülent Pekerman (46) noted.

The replacement election for the Basel Executive and Regional Council is scheduled for March 3, 2024. The new government councilor will take office on May 1, 2024. Health director Lukas Engelberger (48, center) will temporarily take over the business from Beat Jans. (SDA)
