Van der Burg is doing his homework again, still no deal in asylum law

The coalition parties and State Secretary Van der Burg (Asyl) have still not agreed on the new asylum law, which should lead to a better distribution of asylum seekers in the country. “I have the necessary homework again. I’ll take them to the ministry and get to work,” said Van der Burg after a consultation with the parliamentary groups of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie.

On October 1, the law should be ready, with which municipalities can be forced to build an asylum seeker center if necessary. Van der Burg: “I’m missing deadline after deadline and that makes me sad.” However, he still believes that the law will come into force on January 1 next year.

Above all, Van der Burg’s own party, the VVD, is a hindrance. This party has great difficulty in coercing communes. There have been continuous consultations between the coalition partners in recent weeks, but no compromise has been reached so far.

Nevertheless, the State Secretary wants the law to be ready before the autumn break. That would mean that the draft law would have to be discussed in the Council of Ministers tomorrow, because that break is next week.

“I’m looking for support from the population, who don’t always wait for an asylum seeker center in the area. But also support from the municipalities and support for this law in Parliament.”

Asylum policy is already on the agenda of the Council of Ministers, Van der Burg clarified, but he did not want to say whether that also means that the law will be passed. “It’s not Friday yet.”
