As part of the study, 61 subjects were equipped with a robotic arm. They quickly learned to control the extra arm with their breathing, as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) announced. According to the study, controlling the third arm did not affect their ability to speak coherently.

The main motivation for the research was to better understand the nervous system, study leader Silvestro Micera said in the EPFL statement. “If you challenge the brain to do something completely new, you can discover whether it is capable of doing it,” says Micera. “You can then use this knowledge to, for example, design aids for people with disabilities or protocols for rehabilitation after a stroke.” (SDA)
