Computer hardware disposed of incorrectly: canton council approves 400,000 francs for the PUK data leak

In 2020, law enforcement authorities seized dozens of hard drives from the Zurich Ministry of Justice from a previously convicted criminal.

The 400,000 francs for the first year of the study were approved by 151 votes. This means that the quorum of 91 votes for the spending brake was more than met. However, it remains to be seen whether the PUK will actually cost 400,000 francs per year for the data leak affair.

The amount is an empirical value and comes from the last PUK in the canton of Zurich, which was for the civil servants’ pension fund BVK in 2012.

The announcement of the data breach affair shocked the Ministry of Justice of government councilor Jacqueline Fehr (SP) at the end of 2022 – a few months before the elections in Zurich.

It then became known that data carriers and other computer hardware had been unlawfully removed from the Ministry of Justice between 2006 and 2012. It could take up to three years before the final report on the PUK data breach is available.
