Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also met the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, on Monday during his visit to the US capital Washington.

She said Ukraine has managed to “implement and maintain sound economic policies” with the support of the international community. The Ukrainian authorities have demonstrated their commitment to tackling key governance and corruption issues. This is a testament to Selenski’s leadership strength.

In March, the IMF provided Ukraine, which was under attack by Russia, with a billion-dollar financing package. The loan program is expected to give the country access to $15.6 billion. The program is part of an international aid package totaling $115 billion and will last four years.

A decision by the Board of Directors at the time allowed for the immediate disbursement of approximately $2.7 billion. In a first step, the focus was on a solid budget and revenue mobilization. According to the IMF, “ambitious structural reforms” must then be implemented in Ukraine. On Monday, the Board of Directors approved a second $900 million payout. (SDA)
