The community says yes to Grengiols-Solar, but environmental associations have already announced that they want to fight against it.

The solar energy project in Grengiols in the Saflisch Valley in Valais is to be realized. After the double yes from the local community and the residents’ community, the project partners want to submit the building application to the canton in early 2024, Grengiolssolar announced on Sunday.

In the municipality of Grengiols, which had to agree to the building right to make the necessary surface available, 163 people were in favor of the request on Sunday, 94 were against it. When the local community voted, 190 people voted in favor and 70 against the project.

Electricity for 40,000 households

According to the national energy law, the consent of the property owner and the local community is a prerequisite for the canton of Valais to be able to start the approval process after submitting the building application in early 2024. Therefore, the project partners now want to work on completing the file with a view to on public distribution, as mentioned.

Environmental associations have already expressed objections to the project. For example, the Mountain Wilderness organization believes that the location is located in an intact mountain landscape and is underdeveloped, Aaron Heinzmann of Mountain Wilderness recently told the “Tagesanzeiger”. Once the planning application is submitted, any objection to the project is carefully examined.

Grengiols Solar is expected to produce 150 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity annually over an area of 0.8 square kilometers at an altitude of 2,500 meters, of which approximately 43 percent in winter. The electricity can power 40,000 households. It was once announced that it would be much larger; initially there was talk of electricity for 400,000 households. But then it became clear that this was not realistic. (SDA/them)
