Basel councilor Eva Herzog (61) is no longer speculating on a seat in the Federal Council. Since this week she has been chairman of the Council of States, and the small chamber elected the Basel SP politician on Monday with 44 of the 44 valid votes. This makes her the highest ranking Swiss woman. Because she now chairs the Federal Assembly together with President of the National Council Eric Nussbaumer (63), thus holding the highest power in the federal government.

Was it this success that made her so excited this week? In a video shared by a “Nebelspalter” journalist on X, Herzog appears to be a lively dancer.

‘If she were a federal councilor now’

Dressed in a red jacket, she sings the hit “Jung Damn” by Lo & Lebus with the Basel Beizenchor. At the invitation of Herzog, the Basel Choir performed in the Council of States. But as the group described on Instagram shortly later, they had fond memories of the impromptu performance at Herzog’s subsequent appetizer.

There are many reactions online: “If this video had existed a year ago, Eva Herzog would now be a federal councilor,” someone is sure. Others, however, find the spontaneous appearance rather embarrassing.

However, according to the “Tagesanzeiger”, Herzog is now becoming “a secret star” in the Federal Palace. The SVP national councilor Alfred Heer (62) had launched Herzog this week in the “Weltwoche” as an explosive candidate to prevent the two official SP candidates.

Herzog would have liked to join the Federal Council last December as successor to Simonetta Sommaruga (63). Current Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) ultimately won the race. Herzog subsequently took Baume-Schneider’s seat as vice president of the Council of States.

Herzog apparently no longer wants to get involved in political games. She is currently campaigning for her party colleague Beat Jans (59) from Basel to become the next SP federal councilor. If she has her way, Jans will take over on December 13 as successor to the retiring Alain Berset (51). (she)
