Neutral status does not absolve a country from being able to defend itself. The modernization of the Swiss army is therefore important, Bauer, chairman of the military committee of the North Atlantic Defense Alliance (NATO), said in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” on Saturday. Switzerland thus contributes to the protection of the current security order.

To maintain the security order, a state does not have to be a NATO ally. He could also be a partner. “It is critical that we fight for a common cause,” Bauer said.

Moreover, the international population must understand how close the conflicts are. ‘When is war close enough?’ Bauer asked. There is “a real risk of encroachment” by Russia on NATO’s border with Ukraine, he said. This was shown in Romania and Poland. But NATO is about “keeping a cool head when tensions run high,” the admiral said.

Bauer met army chief Thomas Süssli and Defense Minister Viola Amherd in Bern at the beginning of this week. He discussed with Amherd the possibilities for closer cooperation in the field of security policy, as the Federal Council announced on Monday. The meeting with Süssli was about the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the war for Europe. (SDA)
