The Corona autumn wave continues to build. The Federal Office of Health reported about 37,000 new cases within a week. A little over a week ago. But almost three times as much as a month ago.
Officially, there are currently more than 5,000 new cases registered every day. The number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher – with up to 30,000 new infections per day. Individual cantons have therefore tightened the corona measures again: The focus is on a return to the mask obligation, for example in hospitals or retirement homes.
No action needed yet
The board of the cantonal health directors’ conference (GDK), which discussed the corona problem on Thursday, sees no need for action for new corona measures for the time being. “The increase in the number of cases has slowed down recently,” the GDK writes in a statement. There are signs of stagnation. “The Board of Directors therefore sees no reason to resume measures at this time.”
The requirements for new recommendations – an escalation of the epidemiological situation or an imminent overload of the health system – are not being met.
Covid patients manageable
“Although the number of hospital admissions due to Covid-19 has increased, the occupancy rate of hospitals with Covid-19 patients is still at an easily manageable level,” explains the GDK board member.
The situation in hospitals is tense across the board – but not primarily because of the number of Covid 19 patients, but mainly because of staff shortages. According to the GDK, almost the entire population now has antibodies through vaccination and/or recovery.
However, in the elderly, protection against severe disease decreases over time. Instead of new measures, the health directors are therefore “urgently” recommending a booster vaccination for people who are at extra risk. Since October 10, these are also given free of charge in the cantons to all persons over 16 years of age.
voluntarily wearing masks
For the rest, the cantons rely on voluntary participation and responsibility. “Everyone can protect themselves and others without official requirements,” emphasizes the GDK. Masks are especially useful in certain areas – for example, in crowds or on public transport.
