The festivities last all day. After the population reception in Liestal, a boat trip, a parade, a ceremony and a gala dinner are planned in Basel.

On Monday, Herzog became the first Basel woman to be elected president of the Council of States. She is the sixth woman to hold this position. Also on Monday, Eric Nussbaumer of Basel was elected Switzerland’s highest-ranking citizen. He is the 25th Social Democrat to take the presidential seat.

This means that next year two SP members from both Basels will chair the Federal Councils. The celebration costs a total of 480,000 francs. The cantons of Basel-Stadt and Baselland and the city of Liestal participate.
