In August, a train with several carriages derailed in the Gotthard Tunnel.

On Sunday, 31 passenger trains per weekend will again run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

From Friday to Sunday evening, both freight and passenger trains will temporarily run through the tunnel, the SBB wrote in a statement on Wednesday. The routes must be available for freight traffic from Monday to Thursday.

More trains in the spring?

The new offer takes effect from December 10 and is valid until before Easter 2024. What it will look like after that and for the long holiday weekends at Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost remains to be seen. The SBB wants to provide information about this in the first quarter of 2024.

Repair work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is proceeding according to plan after the devastating freight train derailment on August 10, the SBB announced at the end of November during a visit to the construction site in Faido. The tunnel is expected to be fully operational again in September 2024. (SDA)
