The small room followed an individual request from Benedikt Würth (Center/SG). Accordingly, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) should have almost 1.1 billion francs available for social assistance in the asylum system next year. Compared to 2023, expenditure is expected to grow less rapidly.
The National Council has yet to decide on this. The provisional advisory committee requests a reduction of this budget item by the same amount.
The costs for social assistance are estimated by estimating the development of the number of asylum seekers and temporarily admitted persons and their labor participation. Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter argued in favor of sticking to the Federal Council’s proposal. This is based on the most likely scenario with regard to the development of asylum numbers.
