The Council of States wants to make 2.5 million francs more available next year for the protection of religious minorities than originally planned in the Federal Council’s budget. On Tuesday he accepted a proposal from Thierry Burkart (FDP/AG).

The small chamber made its decision with 39 votes in favor and 0 abstentions. At the same time, it has included the corresponding resources in the financial plan for the years 2025 to 2027.

Because of the situation in the Middle East

The money is intended to benefit Jewish and Muslim communities. Burkart based his request specifically on the situation in the Middle East. It is about a small amount, he said, and also about protecting the fundamental right to freedom of belief and conscience.

Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter agreed with the request. It would be a shame if Jews in Switzerland had to fear for their safety, she said. (SDA)
