Since 2008, the canton of Nidwalden has temporarily not levied road tax on cars in the best efficiency category. This is intended to encourage the purchase of low-emission vehicles.

For the SVP, the arrangement is outdated. A vehicle with an efficient drive puts no less strain on the roads than a conventional car. Motieur Urs Amstad (SVP) said in the district council on Wednesday that electric cars have now become commonplace.

The SVP received support from the Groene Delf Bucher. In his vote he called for a complete overhaul of road tax in Nidwalden. This must be entirely focused on energy efficiency. But every car must be taxed.

The government council did not share the position of the motion. The road tax is not a compensation, he explains in his answer. The intention is not to fully finance road infrastructure in a polluter-pays manner.

The government council also points out that reducing CO2 emissions is a climate goal. It therefore remains advisable to promote electric vehicles and cars with low-emission combustion engines. (SDA)
