In addition to standard German, students from Vaud must also learn Swiss German.

For Romandes and Romands, the step over the Röstigraben is often associated with disillusionment. They study German at school for years – and then don’t understand a word when the waitress speaks to them in a Bernese café.

That should change. In the future, the Vaud students’ class schedule could include Swiss German in addition to French, mathematics or sports. On Tuesday, the canton’s Grand Council approved a proposal that wants schools to teach not only standard German, but also dialect.

The director of education is against it

The proposal was submitted by David Raedler (36) of the Greens. The Vaud government must now publish a report showing how and when Swiss German courses can best be offered. Raedler emphasized in the debate that he was not interested in teaching only Swiss German instead of German. It should rather be an addition. With the aim of strengthening cohesion in Switzerland.

Vaud education director Frédéric Borloz (57) cannot accept the demand. The Liberal fought to have the proposal rejected. On the one hand, he pointed to the already overcrowded agenda. On the other hand, schools already offer voluntary courses, but there is no demand among students, parents or teachers. Language exchanges are organized to introduce students to Swiss German.

Which dialect should it be?

The resistance was in vain. Against his will, Borloz now has to investigate how Swiss German lessons can be brought into schools. Should it be voluntary or mandatory? What topics are covered in the Schwiizerdütsch lessons? And last but not least: Which dialect should the students learn?

The government must submit a proposal to the Grand Council within one year. What happens now? About betrayal. (lha/SDA)
