By tightening the regulations, the Federal Council wants to ensure that fewer puppies are carelessly and spontaneously purchased abroad, the Ministry of the Interior (EDI) wrote on Monday at the opening of the consultation. The animals are ordered via the internet and brought to Switzerland in collective transport.
Nowadays there is no minimum age for importing puppies into Switzerland. However, if the dogs are under eight weeks old, they may only be brought into the country with their mother.
According to the EDI, the age limit of 15 weeks or approximately four months applies in many EU countries. However, there should be an exception to the rule for private individuals who pick up a young dog from a breeder abroad. There should also be exceptions for the import of young assistance dogs. (SDA)
