Power makes you hungry for power: I direct, therefore I exist. No one is immune to this temptation, not even the social democrats, and politics thrives on it: anyone who wants to influence society needs the power to act. Power is a political resource.

In the battle for her, two SP talents were victorious yesterday: after more than seven hours and eighteen rounds of voting, Basel government chairman Beat Jans and Graubünden councilor Jon Pult emerged to succeed Alain Berset.

This is primarily a blow for Tamara Funiciello. The co-chair of the SP women had previously convinced, or, depending on your point of view, convinced Bern government councilor Evi Allemann to stand as a candidate – bypassing the Bern SP committees and heading straight for ruin: Allemann was admitted until the elections. second time in a Federal Council race. Absurd: a model feminist becomes a ladykiller, an experienced executive politician becomes cannon fodder.

The other loser from yesterday is called Daniel Jositsch. With more than a quarter of a million votes from citizens, the Zurich Council of States is the best-elected parliamentarian in the country. Jositsch, a veteran of his party, started as a school nurse in Stäfa and, thanks to his political openness to bourgeois views, was always able to build bridges to the right, also to the benefit of his comrades. Daniel Jositsch thus covers the opposite pole of Tamara Funiciello in the SP.

The result of yesterday’s vote is all the more disturbing: in the first round of voting, the law professor, who is popular across party lines, received no fewer than four (!) of the 49 votes.

Four votes versus a quarter of a million: it doesn’t take a political scientist to interpret this result. Something is not right there, it is a case of alienation – and you find yourself searching in the deep darkness of the parliamentarians’ souls for explanations for this democratic slap in the face to the base.

It is entirely up to Daniel Jositsch how he deals with the humiliation. In any case, they don’t seem to need each other anymore. It would only be logical that Jositsch would leave the SP.
