Asylum Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) defends her asylum policy in an interview. She also expects many refugees in the coming year. The magistrate assumes that the number of asylum applications will remain comparable to this year.
In an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”, Baume-Schneider expressed his understanding for concerned residents of asylum centers. She “notices that the population is still very supportive and willing to participate.”
Shows understanding for the growing intolerance
But she also “understands” that “tolerance decreases when something is stolen from your car for the third time,” says the head of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJP), who has now been in office for a year.
She cites the case study of the federal asylum center in Boudry in the canton of Neuchâtel. “There are also challenges” – and measures are being taken, said the Social Democrat. “There are more security staff on public transport and around the asylum centers and better street lighting at night.”
“Don’t be afraid of a Switzerland of 12 million”
Baume-Schneider further defends the free movement of people within the EU: “I am not afraid of a Switzerland of 12 million,” said the Social Democrat. “If we want growth and prosperity, we need employees.”
For them, the limits of growth have not yet been reached. “We need affordable housing. There must be well-developed public transport.” (kes)
