The Federal Office for Agriculture (BLW) collects the most important figures and developments in the agricultural and food industry in the new agricultural report. The most exciting results:
More organic, more women
More and more farms are run by women. However, with a total of 7.2 percent, this share remains at a low level. By 2022, one in six farms will be an organic company. In total, the federal government registered approximately 48,000 agricultural companies in 2022, more than 500 fewer than the year before.
Swiss eggs are very popular
According to a survey by market research institute Demoscope, consumers prefer Swiss products, especially when it comes to eggs (77 percent), milk and fresh milk products (65 percent), and meat and potatoes (58 percent each). According to the survey, respondents mainly chose Swiss agricultural products because short transport routes, support for domestic agriculture and high quality are important to them.
Inflation is causing problems for farmers
Overall, farmers’ expenditure increased more than their income. This means that the average income of farmers has fallen by 1.3 percent. The average amount was 79,700 francs per company. The main reasons for the decline were the sharp increase in the costs of production materials and the further decline in prices on the pig market.
Double Valais for agriculture
In 2022, the agricultural area in Switzerland totaled 1,042,014 hectares, equivalent to approximately double the area of the canton of Valais. Of this, 58 percent consisted of natural meadows and pastures, and 38 percent of the agricultural land was used for arable farming. The remaining 4 percent included vineyards and fruit growing areas.
More and more soy
Soy cultivation has increased significantly over the past ten years and will cover an area of 2,895 hectares in 2022. Overall, soybean acreage is still a relatively small area, but it has almost tripled in ten years.
Bad weather
The self-sufficiency rate in Switzerland decreased significantly in 2021 and amounted to 52 percent gross and 45 percent net. This is the lowest value since the revision of the food balance in 2007.
The main reason for this decline is lower domestic production of plant-based food due to the very bad weather in 2021.
Higher total production
Total Swiss agricultural production is expected to reach 11.9 billion francs in 2023. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 2.0 percent. Gross added value increased by 4.2 percent to 4.5 billion francs. It consists of the total production of Swiss agriculture minus expenditure on intermediate services, amounting to 7.4 billion francs. Intermediate consumption includes feed, energy, fertilizer and others. (SDA)
