Federal councilor Karin Keller-Sutter is not prepared to pay federal officials full cost-of-living compensation in 2024.

The Iron Lady lives up to her name. Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) remains strict and denies federal employees full compensation for living costs. They had demanded compensation of 2.6 percent.

But that will probably only be 1 percent – and at best slightly more for the lowest wages. And there are more low-wage workers in the federal government than commonly thought. For example, cleaning staff only receive a maximum monthly wage of 5,000 francs. But many are below that. – Above all, many cleaners work in small stints. So you don’t get anywhere near 5,000 francs a month.

“We are disappointed”

“We are disappointed. A good employer compensates for inflation, also in view of the shortage of skilled workers,” says Matthias Humbel, responsible sector manager at the personnel association Transfair. “The low-wage classes in particular urgently need compensation. “After all, health insurance premiums are rising also strong and this is wrongly not taken into account when it comes to inflation,” he notes.

And he adds: “Over the past two years, inflation could not be fully offset. Now the cost of living adjustment should be significantly lower. In fact, federal wages are falling as a result. It would be especially important for low-wage workers to hold them harmless.”

Three rounds of negotiations

The employee representatives had held three rounds of negotiations with Keller-Sutter without reaching an agreement. The social partners write that the positions are too far apart. In addition to the Service-Public Personnel Association Transfair, the Federal Personnel Association (PVB), the Association of Public Personnel (VPOD), Garanto (customs and border protection), the Association of Federal Cadres (VKB) and Swisspersona (military personnel), these include .

The associations had unsuccessfully launched a petition to increase pressure on the Federal Council. Nearly 9,000 federal employees signed it. According to the social partners, the Federal Council will soon independently determine the salaries of federal staff in the coming year. (pt/lha)
