The canton of St. Gallen has submitted a request to the federal government to shoot the entire Calfeisental pack. Due to the damage to the sheep, authorities approved the shooting of three wolf pack puppies in August 2023.
The goal of the canton of St. Gallen is to only tolerate wolves that behave unproblematically and accept herd protection measures, the canton wrote in a statement on Monday. However, the Calfeisental pack has already wreaked havoc on sheep.
Pack is “particularly harmful”
To slow the further rapid spread of wolves and improve coexistence between humans and wolves, the Calfeisental pack should be eliminated as a “particularly harmful pack,” the statement continued.
The inclusion of three puppies from the pack, which was approved last August, has not yet been carried out. After being regularly sighted in the Calfeisental on the border with the canton of Graubünden while the pups were being raised, the pack has now become mobile and moves more widely. (SDA)
