Bacteria are also becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics in Switzerland.

The Federal Office for Public Health (BAG), the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV), the Federal Office for Agriculture (BLW) and the Office for the Environment (Bafu) provided information on the National Antibiotic Resistance Strategy (StAR) in Bern on Monday . This was adopted by the Federal Council in 2016. The goal is to maintain the effectiveness of antibiotics, because the emergence of resistant bacteria is one of the most serious health problems worldwide.

StAR has implemented important measures that reduce antibiotic use and prevent the spread of resistant bacteria. In human medicine, consumption of antibiotics that are particularly crucial for the development of resistance has fallen by 37 percent between 2012 and 2022. In veterinary medicine, antibiotic prescriptions have fallen by almost half since 2012. According to the announcement, critical antibiotics were reduced by approximately two-thirds.

Measures in all areas

Because people, animals, agriculture and the environment are equally affected by antibiotic resistance, measures will be developed and implemented in all these areas, the four federal agencies wrote in the communication.

Infection prevention is a way to reduce the use of antibiotics and infections with resistant pathogens, the report said. Depending on the type of infection, 35 to 55 percent of infections in hospitals or other health facilities could be avoided through targeted monitoring, prevention and control.

The minimum requirements that hospitals must meet to prevent and combat these infections have been determined nationally in 2021, the report said. All new healthcare professionals who come into contact with patients should undergo training on measures to limit the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria between patients. This included hand hygiene and patient isolation.

Infection prevention also in veterinary medicine

It is also important that hospitals screen patients transferred from other healthcare institutions for the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. This can limit the introduction of pathogens. Infection prevention and control are also of great importance in veterinary medicine. Training on this topic would have a significant impact.

In Switzerland, various participants in the World AMR Awareness Week of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) are organizing panel discussions, further training, company tours or information stands from 18 to 24 November 2023. In addition, national communication activities are carried out through online testimonials and videos and a website. (SDA)
